Valado dos Frades is a parish in the municipality of Nazaré.
The toponym, according to some, derives from velado (verb velar) because in this place there was a friar whose function was to velar the fields that belonged to the monastery of Alcobaça, according to others because in the fields around there were many ditches (fields valados), for its drainage. As for the friars, it is due to the Cistercian friars who settled in Alcobaça around the middle of the 12th century.
Valado dos Frades is a village where a small minority still follows the tradition of agriculture, mainly in the cultivation of carrots, potatoes, cabbages, green beans and other vegetables. The land of Valado is fertile partly because it is surrounded by the rivers Areia, Alcoa, Meio and Tábuas.
But what allowed the economic development of the parish were the faience and porcelain factories, especially SPAL, Pereiras Lda, Louçarte and Sodecal, all of them exporters, which opened several jobs to the inhabitants of Valado and the rest of the population of the Nazaré municipality.
