Child benefit scales: what changes in 2024?

It was in the Diário da República that we learnt the new values for the family allowance brackets. This decree updates the amounts of family allowances for 2024, with the aim of strengthening the protection provided to Portuguese families. This includes family allowances and their different levels, including the supplement to the extraordinary support for children and young people.

In the context of the Child Guarantee Action Plan, the commitment, which began in 2022, to guarantee a global annual amount of 1464 euros (122 euros per month) to all children and young people under the age of 18 at risk of extreme poverty will be fulfilled.

What does family allowance mean?
Family allowance is a monthly cash benefit paid by the state to cover family expenses related to the support and education of young people and children. 

At the beginning of 2024, the increases related to cases of single parenthood will be updated and the amounts for larger families will be reinforced, with reference to the amounts established for the family allowance for children and young people.

Who is entitled to family allowance?
Children and young people whose household income depends on their means test are entitled to the family allowance.

The means test corresponds to the income limit and the value of the household's assets. In the case of family allowance, the limit is 240 times the value of the social support index (IAS), i.e. €115,303.20 (240 x €480.43).
